To improve energy efficiency, buildings today are constructed or retrofitted to be leak-proof. However, tighter building envelopes can have an adverse effect on indoor air quality. This makes ventilation and air handling even more vital. With instruments to monitor airflow, temperature, humidity, and differential pressure on either side of filters, industrial HVAC systems can operate more optimally, leading to better air quality, greater sustainability, and cost savings.

WIKA has designed the air2guideTM series of instruments and controllers specifically for industrial HVAC applications, helping manufacturers and building owners create a more comfortable environment while saving money.

What to Monitor in HVAC Systems

Industrial HVAC units and systems typically measure and monitor these four areas:

Temperature — The usual points for temperature measurements in industrial HVAC systems are air inlet, air outlet, ducts, heat exchangers, and water tanks. The choice of Dial thermometer, averaging RTD, or temperature switch depends on the type of HVAC unit and the location of the measuring point.

Pressure — In HVAC systems, pressure measurement inside ducts, pipes, and circuit lines help monitor and manage the circulation of air, water, and oil. Bourdon tube pressure gauges and pressure switches are excellent pressure solutions for industrial HVAC applications. Also useful are gauges that measure differential pressure and provide an electrical output signal, like the A2G-15.

Flow — Monitoring airflow inside ducts can tell how evenly air is distributed, which gives a measure of the unit’s efficiency. For example, air handling units routinely incorporate primary flow elements, flow switches, and/or airflow sensors in the fans to optimize air velocity and distribution.

Level — Measuring and controlling level with a float switch or optoelectronic switch is key to ensuring safety in HVAC systems, where too much or too little fluid can compromise personnel and equipment. That is the case of water level in boilers and oil level in the engine of combined heat and power (CHP) plants.
